The Byrds - "It Won't be Wrong"

The Byrds’ legendary status in rock history is probably the only thing that allows Noel Gallagher to sleep at night.

Well, that AND a pile of money. But I digress…

The reason Noel’s conscious is so clean is because he isn’t the first guy to rip off the Beatles and cash in on it. Roger McGuinn beat him to that hustle by about 30 years. McGuinn took the old motto “If you can’t beat them, join them” to new lucrative heights by shamelessly coping the British guitar pop that compelled legions of screaming, teenage fangirls to throw themselves (and their money) at the Beatles, and combining it with good ol’ American west coast folk. The result: psychedelic rock. “It Won’t Be Wrong” (a b-side that charted higher than its single) is crafted from the warm, jangly sound that formed psychedelic rock’s beginnings, and it’s propelled by a dirty baseline that corrupts the song’s supposed honorable intentions. I think the kids all knew what Roger was REALLY singing about here. He may as well be winking when those drums kick in during the chorus.
